GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The sour economy is trickling down to pets in Westmoreland County, where the local humane society got a litter of 10 puppies Monday from people who said they couldn't afford to take care of the animals.Recently, the Humane Society of Westmoreland County got a $2,000 grant from the Humane Society of the United States to help prevent animal abandonment.Executive Director Kathy Burkley said the Westmoreland grant money will be used to help local people pay for their pets' medical treatment.
"We're trying to get people who call us to keep their dogs, if at all possible, if we can help them with a spay or a neuter, a flea product. Some of these people can't even afford to go out and buy a $15 tube per month of a flea product," Burkley said.
