Pittsburgh Electric Engines Plant Opens In Mount Pleasant

POSTED: 4:37 pm EDT August 11, 2008

The new Pittsburgh Electric Engines, Inc. facility celebrated its official opening Monday on East Main Street in Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County.

Employees at the plant, which used to be a Lenox glass plant, are developing a turbo fuel cell engine for commercial and military vehicles. It's a combination of a fuel cell and a turbine.

The U.S. Department of Defense wants to use the engines in heavy trucks as a mobile electric power source on the battlefield.

U.S. Rep. John Murtha, chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, attended a ribbon-cutting event at the new plant Monday.
