SOMERSET, Pa. -- A retired science teacher from Grove City has been charged with raping and sexually assaulting a former student from Somerset Area Junior High School in 2001.Police said Stephen Shaffer, 55, is accused of assaulting the female eighth-grader when she was 13 and 14 years old on two different occasions.Police told WTAE Channel 4 Action News that the former student, now 21, recently came forward and claimed that the rape happened in Shaffer's home.
"Even though it has taken her that many years, she has grown and become strong enough to reach this point of pursuing prosecution," Somerset Police Chief Randy Cox said.Love letters, cards and notes that indicate a physical relationship will be presented as evidence at Shaffer's preliminary hearing later this month, police said.Shaffer was charged with rape, statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault and other related crimes. A phone number for him could not immediately be found Wednesday.Authorities said Shaffer retired in 2005 and surrendered his teacher's license in November.More County News...
