Most women don’t like cellulite, yet more and more seem to be getting it.But why don't men get it as much?"Men have thicker skin," said famed plastic surgeon Dr. Leo McCafferty. "It's just a fact."
McCafferty explains cellulite is a skin problem and not a fat problem.Tiny connective threads run straight up between the muscle and the outer epidermis on women, causing cellulite. On males, the connective threads are crossed, which naturally keeps skin tighter and more intact. As you age, your skin loses elasticity, too. When that happens in women, the fat between the connective threads pushes up on the skin, creating the cellulite dimpled effect. So how do you get rid of it?There are many creams, lotions and pills on the market that target cellulite, but do they work? One over the counter cellulite patch even promises to take it away."Some of these creams will provide temporary relief," said McCafferty. But he said the cellulite never goes away."And some of these creams are expensive," he said. "Women can spend $200 to $300 a month just on creams."Instead, eating right, drinking water, avoiding the sun and exercising is your best defense.Personal trainer Ben Perrin said tightening the skin can be done, but it takes a lot of work with tummy tightening and thigh toning exercises.First, start with the lunge. Get as big a stride as you can with your shoulders back and stomach sucked in.Make sure your knee forms a 90-degree angle above your front toe. Do 10 reps, and feel the deep burn.Next, try the static squat."First motion, stick (your behind) out like your are getting into a chair," said Perrin. Then, slowly sit down, always resting your weight on your heels."As you perform this, make sure that your thighs are parallel to the ground," Perrin said.Do 10 reps of this exercise. Finally, the leg lift will help get results.Align your hips and straighten your arms. Raise your leg to a 90-degree angle, push up, squeeze and hold.Try these exercises three times a week and combine with a healthy lifestyle to get rid of those unwanted cellulite dimples.
